The Buckwheat Boyz was a musical group founded by Marcus Bowens and Jermain Fuller, later adding keyboardist J.J. O'Neal and drummer Dougy Williams. The Buckwheat Boyz were signed by Koch Records, and recorded their first and only full-length record. From this self-titled album, the song "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" became an Internet superhit after a flash music video featuring a dancing banana was created. Popularity of the song increased as it was featured on television shows such as The Proud Family and Family Guy. The unfortunate death of founding member and vocalist Jermain Fuller lead to disbandment of the group sometime in late 2001.
Their song "Ice Cream and Cake" rapidly rose in popularity after being featured in a 2009 Baskin-Robbins marketing campaign, which included a television commercial and an Ice Cream and Cake Dance Video Contest.[1] In August 2009, Baskin-Robbins kicked off the contest by hosting the Guinness World Records™ Largest Cheerleading Dance event with Mario Lopez of Extra TV and 225 members of the Unversal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), at the University of California Los Angeles.[2] However, as of August 2011, the Guinness World Records archive states that the record for largest cheeerleading dance was set in November 2009 by 297 participants at the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee. It is not known whether this was event was related to the Baskin-Robbins contest.[3]
Old Dominion University is known for playing "Ice Cream and Cake" at home basketball games at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, and enjoys very active crowd dance participation.[4]
